After farming with chemicals in the 1960’s I noticed that weeds were becoming tolerant to herbicides, insects to insecticide and fungus to fungicides. Bacteria were becoming resistant to the antibiotics fed regularly to pigs and poultry and immunity was being passed on to human beings through eating pork and chickens. Birds, wild animals and insects were being destroyed also and with the prairie farming that I was as guilty of as anyone else the countryside was being denuded of life. As if these environmental dangers were not bad enough, the quality of food that was on offer to the general public was without good flavour or texture and not designed to be enjoyed. On the other hand it was clear that this form of food production fitted in ideally with the supermarket’s profit figures. At the time we were relatively self sufficient with pigs, some hens and a cow, we also grew our own fruit and vegetables. What better situation to pursue our work, hobby and pleasures of producing good wholesome food and eating it? It has been said that it is a sad heart that sees no chance to rejoice and we did. It seemed that this was also an essential element lacking in so many other people’s lives. Bland food offered in supermarkets was not the answer to man’s pleasure then and it still is not today. Therefore we decided that we should offer an alternative for those who really enjoy good food to give them a choice and show them how great British food can be. It was with this in mind that in the mid 70’s we changed our ways, gave up using chemicals and started farming organically. It soon became our pleasure to grow food that was greeted enthusiastically by housewives and househusbands alike. This new way of farming did not depend on the expensive subsidies neither did it do great environmental damage. We therefore rested peacefully at night in the knowledge that this was the correct path to follow. However, they also say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions and this road to sustainable farming turned out to be very rocky indeed. Nonetheless we have continually striven to keep to our principles and have embraced the new technology available and now with the advent of the internet we have been able to create a farmer’s market on the web. We do present the finest produce from the land and shores of Great Britain for your enjoyment. We are proud of the foods we offer and are confident that you will enjoy them. We pride ourselves in offering the best quality meats, fish and game that you cannot find easily elsewhere. You will find that our prices are reasonable and often much less expensive than other suppliers. Although organic food is at a premium to foods produced with chemicals and drugs, we give the best value for the superior taste and texture that our foods have. All deliveries over £35 are completely free of any delivery or packaging charges. We specialise in offering a full range of organic, free range and wild foods. You can sample a wide variety of rare breeds from different producers all in the same delivery. We use the best of the new technology with our website and combine this with personal service by telephoning or e mailing you to confirm orders and delivery days. We also ring to inform you when your order is dispatched and deal with any problems that might occur promptly and personally. Our meat comes from animals that are reared with a priority on welfare. They live happily with freedom and a good quality of life. They are slaughtered on the farm or at a nearby abattoir. Similarly, the fish is caught in day boats at Looe in Cornwall which ensures quality and alleviates suffering. If your delivery does not reach you satisfactorily we will re send a similar one the next week. All of our foods that are labelled “Organic” carry a symbol to say that they are certified by The Soil Association or similar official body. This guarantees that the produce has been reared, inspected and certified officially. If you would like to know more you can visit www.soilassociation.org. ------------------------------------ Succulent and Tender Organic Meats Organically Reared In The UK British organic meat and other organic farm products are successfully produced by certified farmers, in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Midlands area, who supply only traditional and natural organic farming produce. Eighty percent of the animal protein produced around the world comes from animals that are either fed with feed that has been grown with artificial fertilizers and has been sprayed with pesticides, or they are reared in a feedlot or battery system where they are fed a concoction of hormones and antibiotics. There is an ongoing debate as to just how much of these additives actually reach our serving dishes subsequent to cooking a meal, however, organic meat debaters say that the potentially dangerous chemicals do not bypass through the animals systems, but in reality mount up in the fatty tissue. The animals which provide us with organic meat and dairy produce, roam and graze without restraint and by no means under any state of affairs receive hormones, growth promoters or antibiotics. As a substitute, they are simply treated with homeopathic remedies. Organic meat also lowers the risk of another outbreak of ‘mad cow disease’ as there is less chance of organically fed and raised cattle having Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE), BSE can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. CJD is a rare, degenerative, invariably fatal brain disorder. CJD came under the spotlight in the late 1980’s when British farmers added recycled meat and bone meal from infected cows into cattle feed and this in turn caused an epidemic. The debate rages on about whether organic meat is healthier than ordinary meat and the jury is still out on this matter. Earlier this year, researchers found that organic meat include the same nutrients as non-organic meat and in the same amounts. The same researchers reported that the single advantage of organic food is that they contain little, if any, pesticides or herbicides. They also found that non-organic meat might contain cancer – causing ingredients, whereas organic-meat contains Flavonoids that are cancer – fighting phytochemicals, which are antioxidants and are therefore beneficial to health. Research also has proven that prolonged exposure to herbicides and pesticides used in farming can be very dangerous for people’s health. There generally is no scientific evidence to prove that organic meats are safer or more nutritious than non-organic. All organic livestock are free range, but each and every one of the free-range animals are not necessarily organic. ‘Free range’ means that the animals are allowed to live natural lives. They are free to roam the fields, intermingle with other animals and eat a plant – based diet. But time and again free-range animals are treated using conventional veterinary methods and the plant – based food stuff that they eat, may be full of artificial additives. Traditional and natural farmers make use of only 100% natural feed and care for their sick livestock with permitted homeopathic remedies. Buying organic animal products is better for your health. Organic farms use 70 percent less energy than industrial farms and since they do not use pesticides they help preserve ground water. The farming techniques of organic farms build quality top-soil and do not contribute to its erosion. An organic meat farmer uses less energy with careful ecological management and uses natural ecological balances to solve pest problems. HERE ARE SOME RECENT RECOMMENDATIONS “As a business owner and on the basis that any customer feedback is good feedback, here's some from us. We think you have a great company and we love the choice and the quality of excellent meat. Our children are developing a discerning palette and 'Save The Bacon' is shorthand for quality in our house. "Is this Save the Bacon or just ordinary?" they ask, or "when Alex comes round can we have a "save the bacon dinner?" Mr Adrian Wheeler Kingston Upon Thames --------------------------- “Dear Doug, Thank you for the newsletter and I do fully agree with your sentiments. I wish you all the best for the future - if I return to the UK I will definetly be looking up your website again. Many thanks Jo Jewell" West Malling Kent ----------------------------------------- "Dear Carol and Doug, This is just a short message to say how much I appreciated the meat I ordered from you guys for Christmas. The 3 Partridges I ordered were well prepared with no bruising and tasted excellent. The sirloin joint that I ordered was the finest joint I had ever eaten and I've eaten a few! The wild boar sausages were very tasty and were a real genuine surprise. Anyway all that is left to eat now is the game pie. Thanks again and keep up the good work, I will be ordering again from you soon. Regards Julian" Mr Julian Bolton Brentford Middx --------------------------------------------- "Happy New Year Save the Bacon, Just thought I would drop a line to give sincere thanks for the produce we were sent this Christmas. Lisa Rickrard, Potters Bar -------------------------- Hi Doug and colleagues Just to thank you for the prompt and perfect fulfilment of my recent order. Can’t wait to tuck in! All the best Beth Porter -------------------------------- Just want to say how very pleased we are with the pork which we had delivered last week. Had the first bit for lunch today and it was everything we wanted, especially the crackling! Thank you very much. Mrs anne godsall ----------------------------------------- Many thanks for the venison striploin. It was extremely nice, and it went down very well and impressed the family from the youngest to the oldest. It mady a very nice change from turkey which we have had for the last thirty plus years. Regards Robert Mr Robert Harding --------------------------------- I'd like to say a big thankyou to you both, especially Carol, for all your hard work in completing my order. Firstly, for substituting beef fillet steak instead of the unavailable veal fillet - excellent choice! Secondly, for keeping in contact when there were problems surrounding the delivery. It's so much better to talk to someone when there's a problem, rather than waiting for a reply to an email. Thirdly, for being so nice and friendly when faced with a situation beyond your control - namely a poor courier - and offering a refund or replacement of defrosted goods. There are many people who would have said 'we kept our side of the bargain, your complaint is with the courier' and washed their hands of the matter. For the ease of use of your website, the willingness to change the order when items were unavailable (and the hunting round you did to ascertain this), and your superlative after-sales care, I have no hesitation in recommending you to my friends. Kind regards, John Perrett ----------------------------- Dear Carol and Douglas, I received my pheasants, chicken and salmon earlier this afternoon without a hitch.
